Flashback to the Spring of 2012: I am sitting in the bleachers of my school, watching my sister’s high school graduation. I was an eighth grader at the time, about to enter my freshman year. I remember sitting there thinking “Wow. It’s only 2012, 2017 is going to take forever to get here.”
T-minus 6 hours until we are about to enter 2017, the year I graduate high school. Oh my lanta. I have waited forever for this year to come, but now I am not so sure I want it to arrive. I would like to savor the year of 2016 for a little while..
2016 has been a rollercoaster for me. A year that brought me another breakup, sickness, lost friends, boy problems, and things I just do not want to remember. However, 2016 has brought me so many opportunities that has shaped me into a better, stronger person today. This year has brought me many laughs, career opportunities, an unforgettable flight to Florida, and my baptism that had only led me to grow a better, closer relationship with Jesus.
I know we all hope for 2017 to be “our year” but it is no lie that the worst of 2016 is going to follow us into the new year. We all are going to face heartbreak, death, financial struggles and sickness because that is just life right?
BUT the good news is that in the mix of all the broken craziness, one good thing still remains.
As the clock strikes midnight and the ball drops, Jesus is still going to be with us. He is going to be in every adventure-good and bad. I know that in my new year, I will have a Father there to guide me, comfort me, and strengthening me to become a warrior of Christ. I know that when I worship, follow, and love God, I will have Him with me in 2017.
With graduation upon me and leaving home, it reminded me that a new year means a new beginning in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says that therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old is gone, the new is here. When we laid down our life and gave it to Christ, he gave us the free gift of our identity being in Him. He did not create us to be average, He created us to be unique, to stand out as Christians. This year, I challenge y’all to pray a little differently and dig deeper into His word. Just wait and see where God takes you throughout the year of 2017.
